New Waverley Nominated For Prestigious UK Property Award

New Waverley, our £150 million regeneration scheme currently transforming the heart of the city’s Old Town, has been nominated for a top national property award.

New Waverley was one of only a handful of UK-wide developments to make the shortlist for the fiercely-contested ‘Placemaking’ category of the 2017 Property Week Awards. The event will be held in London on April 4th.

The placemaking award rewards “commercial and mixed use developments that have regenerated and physically improved the built environment around a particular site”. Delivered by Artisan Real Estate Investors, the award nomination recognises its current status as one of the UK’s most important city-centre regeneration sites, taking place in the historic and highly sensitive World Heritage Site of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Clive Wilding, New Waverley’s Project Director said: “We are looking forward to the awards and are all delighted that New Waverley has made this prestigious national shortlist – especially as ‘placemaking’ is what our development is all about. “For the last two years, we have worked hard to make New Waverley be an integral part of Edinburgh’s Old Town, breathing new life back to a formerly neglected part of the city centre. This award nomination shows that our efforts are now paying off and I am delighted that New Waverley’s considerable impact is being recognised on a national stage by our peers and public alike.”

The New Waverley development has completed the latest phase with two Whitbread Premier Inn hotels which opened in January 2016, and The Arches, a row of 19 Victorian arches which have been transformed to create an exciting new leisure and retail district for the city.

In December last year, the new 146-apartment Aparthotels Adagio overlooking Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, opened for business overlooking a new football pitch-sized public square becoming the first significant public space to open in the city centre for more than 50 years.

New Waverley Nominated For New Awards

After winning the Commercial Project of the Year title at the coveted Herald Property Awards back in November, we are proud to announce New Waverley has been nominated again for two new awards at next years Scottish Property Awards.

The nominated categories are City Regeneration Property of the Year (sponsored by Anderson Strathern) and Development of the Year (sponsored by Rydens).

The annual Scottish Property Awards are an independent programme which celebrates excellence in commercial property. The 2017 programme includes a refreshed list of categories and an independent judging panel of 18 experts drawn from across the commercial and public property sector in Scotland.

The event takes place at The Corn Exchange, Edinburgh on the 2nd of March 2017

Edinburgh Lights Up With Literature For Winter

A new community arts project backed by New Waverley and run by The City of Literature Trust, shines a sparkling light on Edinburgh’s literary heritage with its Canongate Stars and Stories project.

Running until the end of March 2017, an illuminated trail of 20 quotations which celebrate Edinburgh’s outstanding print and publishing heritage was launched last week on the Royal Mile.

Twenty light boxes, ranging from 30 inches to 6ft, featuring quotes and phrases drawn from famous books and writers from across the ages go on display in the windows of businesses along the Old Town’s Canongate area running from John Knox House to Dynamic Earth.

The City of Literature website tells the full story of each location and the rich and fascinating history of each of the light box quotations.

Those in Edinburgh can download a special Canongate Stars and Stories digital trail which has been made available in the Edinburgh World Heritage iPhone app, and visitors can tweet their pictures and experience using the #wordsonthestreet.

The project is a collaboration between local businesses, literary organisations and community groups. It has been funded by the New Waverley Community Fund, the City of Edinburgh Council, Edinburgh Tourism Action Group and Union Projects.

December Launch For New Aparthotels Adagio

The new 146-apartment Aparthotels Adagio overlooking Edinburgh’s Royal Mile will open for business on December 19 2016. This completes the latest phase of the New Waverley development.

This pre-Christmas opening for a new public square and walkway has been inspired by Edinburgh’s Historic ‘Wynds.’ Linking the Royal Mile with the historic Canongate area at the heart of the city’s Old Town, the aparthotel overlooks a new football pitch-sized public square, becoming the first significant public space to open in Edinburgh’s centre for more than 50 years.

The impressive 4-storey Adagio has been painstakingly constructed behind an existing façade of two 1930s tenement buildings overlooking the Royal Mile – one of which is the C-listed Sailors Ark building. Formerly this was an ex-serviceman’s hostel which helped feed the city’s homeless before and after the Second World War.

Adagio’s innovative aparthotel brand has been successfully rolled out across Europe and is now being applied to some of the UK’s premier city centre destinations. Edinburgh is the third UK opening, following launches in Birmingham in 2015 and Liverpool in 2013. The aparthotel provides hotel services and fully furnished studios and one-bedroomed apartments complete with stylish kitchens and bathrooms. Adagio Aparthotels are setting a new benchmark for high quality self-catering accommodation.

New Waverley’s new public square is set to become home to a host of marketing and arts-based activities aimed at increasing visitor interest and footfall to this previously neglected part of the city centre. The square is linked to the Royal Mile by a cleverly designed covered walkway inspired by the Old Town’s historic ‘Wynds’. As well as reflecting the area’s unique World Heritage setting, The Wynd has been designed so it gradually increases in size as it joins the public square, opening up a spectacular view corridor from the Royal Mile across the Waverley Valley towards Calton Hill.

The launch of the aparthotel and new public square heralds New Waverley’s next construction phase. Artisan Project Director, Clive Wilding commented “The combination of the aparthotel and new public square provides a brilliant new addition to the Old Town and continues the significant momentum New Waverley has created in the city centre since we started construction less than two years ago.

“At the start of the year we opened two Premier Inn hotels and, together with the huge interest in The Arches, we are seeing life, excitement and vibrancy returning to this wonderful but neglected part of the city.

“The opening of the Aparthotels Adagio and new public square creates the perfect platform on which to launch our next commercial construction phase. This will see high quality office provision, new homes and more hospitality and retailers complete this unique integrated development. New Waverley sits at the heart of one of the most historic and environmentally sensitive areas to be found anywhere in the world.”

The Arches at Edinburgh’s New Waverley Wins Top Property Award

We are excited to announce that The Arches has been awarded the Commercial Project of the Year title in the coveted Herald Property Awards for Scotland, held in Glasgow on Thursday the 22nd of September.

Regarded as the blue-riband accolade of the night’s awards – This prestigious award recognises the huge progress The Arches on East Market Street has made in 2016, transforming a formerly neglected part of Edinburgh into a vibrant leisure and commercial quarter in the heart of the Old Town. The judges were “incredibly impressed” with The Arches, describing it as “a stand-out entry in a hugely competitive category.”

Clive Wilding, New Waverley’s Project Director added: “The Arches has been an amazing success for New Waverley this year, both in the quality of its design and in the quality of its tenants. We have seen the area transformed from a quiet back street into a buzzing, exciting place to visit, offering something completely different to other city centre locations. “We are truly delighted that The Arches is now recognised by our industry peers as Scotland’s top commercial project. The Arches provide a high profile gateway for the rest of the New Waverley development which is now progressing on all fronts.”

The project was delivered in partnership with Edinburgh-based Staran Architects, Union Projects and Horizon M&E Services Design Ltd.

A row of 19 newly renovated, spectacular C-listed brickwork arches, The Arches were originally constructed in 1875 to create double-height openings beneath the city’s Jeffrey Street. Now Artisan Real Estate Investors, the developers behind New Waverley, has brought the historic arches back to life, bringing together an eclectic community of independent retailers, cafes and restaurants to provide a refreshing contrast to typical high street environments.

Currently, 15 of the 19 arches are occupied, with tenants including Vino, Tempo Tea Bar, Gannet & Guga,Chop House, Juice Warrior, Lauren Gollan Academy of Make-Up Artistry, Elk and Wolf, Baba Budan, Mudo Art and 6 Yard Box. Opening very soon is the boutique Atticus.

The Arches Welcomes Chop House

Chop House has become our latest addition to The Arches – the thriving new leisure and retail quarter housed in a row of Victorian arches on East Market Street in the heart of the city’s Old Town.

Now open, Chop House Market Street is building on the contemporary bar and butchery concept that made the original restaurant in Leith one of the city’s most talked-about destinations. Set within a stunning C-listed brickwork arch in the heart of the Old Town, just 2 minutes from Waverley Railway Station, the restaurant has a focus on ‘best of British’ steak and innovative cocktails.

Offering a 60-cover restaurant, Chophouse is positioned in one of the largest arches. The space offers a large bar area over two floors with a breath-taking view of the city towards Calton Hill. Award-winning design agency Four-by-Two has created a cutting-edge interior and the lower level is home to a cocktail bar and intimate booth seating while upstairs hosts a stunning restaurant and kitchen, complete with an open-flame charcoal grill.

Launched by The Compass Group, the group also operates Edinburgh venues Monteiths, Sygn and The West Room.

The Waverley Arches are a row of 19 newly renovated Victorian arches on East Market Street, Edinburgh – part of the £150 million New Waverley development currently transforming the heart of the Old Town.

Chop House joins a host of other tenants who opened at The Arches in 2016. These include Gannet & Guga, Vino, Elk and Wolf, Lauren Gollan Academy of Make-Up Artistry, Juice Warrior, Baba Budan, Mudo Art, Tempo Tea Bar and 6 Yard Box.
