New Waverley Government Hub Rapidly Taking Shape 2019

February 8, 2019

New Waverley is rapidly taking shape and is fast fulfilling its promise to become an established and vibrant city centre quarter which is reshaping and regenerating the heart of Edinburgh’s historic old town.

As we enter into February 2019, the new UK Government office building is nearing completion and is set to home 2,900 government workers from next year. The seven-level development comprises two interlinked office buildings providing almost 200,000 sq. ft. of ultra-modern Grade A office space. The new Government offices will offer the highest levels of sustainability and operational efficiency, and employees will benefit from a contemporary design with added staff amenities including a landscaped roof area providing sweeping views across the Waverley Valley.

The UK Government will relocate the 2,900 civil service jobs to its new regional hub by 2020 under the terms of a 25-year lease. This will be the UK Government’s cross-departmental flagship Hub in Scotland and will include HMRC, which will operate one of its 13 regional centres from New Waverley.

The hub will also function as the Scottish base of several government bodies – including the Office of the Secretary of State for Scotland, the Office of the Advocate General, the Competition and Markets Authority, the Office for Statistics Regulation, the Government Actuary’s Department and HM Treasury. Staff from the Health and Safety Executive and the Information Commissioner’s Office will also be based here.

The opening of the office hub will complete the cornerstone of New Waverley’s current development phase, which will see the high-quality office space blend with restaurants, cafes and shops around a new public plaza. Other current developments on track for completion in 2019 include the transformation of the Canongate Venture, a derelict 19th century Victorian Primary School, is into a boutique hotel restoring the building back to its previous glory.
